# Project Description Unseen Channel Ji Chen Summary Final work JI CHEN is a Chinese visual artist and curator whose practice encompasses photography, video, performance, installation, sound, and integrated materials. Through her work, she explores the complex dynamics surrounding women's experiences within society, focus themes of gender, identity, and cultural expectations. Operating from a critical standpoint, she challenges and redefines established narratives, institutions, and social constructs. One recurring theme in JI CHEN's work is the deconstruction of stereotypes and the exploration of the female body as a site of agency and resistance. She challenges traditional aesthetic norms and societal expectations, seeking to empower women and disrupt the patriarchal structures that confine them. Through her imagery and performances, JI CHEN aims to reclaim and redefine femininity on her own terms, emphasizing the strength, resilience, and individuality inherent in each woman's lived experience. Through her work, JI CHEN invites viewers to question prevailing norms, assumptions, and power structures. It urges us to question the roles we play, the choices we make, and the burdens we bear in order to meet the standards set by others. This collection invites viewers to navigate the unseen channels that shape their lives, redefining narratives their own authentic identities. Final work "Infinite Circles" explores the profound symbolism of hair as an embodiment of external control and societal expectations. Through my performance, using numerous colored rubber bands meticulously tied round and round in my hair, I delve into the complex narrative of childhood experiences and the impact of rigid hair codes enforced upon girls. My work sheds light on the stifling of individuality and the perpetuated the notion that conformity equates to beauty. "Growing Layers" is an intimate exploration of cultural symbolism, family expectations, and the intricate interplay between food, gender, and identity. Inspired by the special food of my hometown(Ningbo) — Chinese traditional rice cake，my practice delves into the complexities of family dynamics, societal pressures, and the negotiation of personal identity within traditional frameworks. Unseen Channels 37 is my feet’s size which is what my mother thinks is the perfect female's feet size. Through this performance, I invite viewers to contemplate the broader implications of societal expectations on individual identity and personal agency. It prompts us to question the roles we play, the choices we make, and the weight we bear to meet the standards set by others.
