College Chelsea College of Arts Course BA (Hons) Fine Art Graduation year 2025 Somewhere Between Here and Then is a multimedia installation that uses material as poetic language, encompassing an intersection between memory and imagination. It speaks to the transition of childhood to adulthood in an existential world bordering on nihilism and the universal longing for escape. Final work Taking inspiration from myth, literature, Fantasy cinema, and philosophy, Jessica's work materializes both sanctuary and escape, communicating the desire for a magical happening like that out of a movie, to rupture the mundane cycle of the everyday. Jessica's practice often involves collecting and gathering to generate ideas with a strong focus on experimentation and 'play' as process. This work was made using found objects and scrap materials The tree and pond, both surreal in the environment, have connotations to Celtic mythology. Their liminal nature in its history marked them as symbols of hidden magic. Certain trees were believed to guardian doorways between realms and waters were sometimes thresholds to the otherworld. In the work they suggest a transition, time passed, and manifestations conjured into reality. The implied imagery of domestic space speaks to the artists contradicting memories and emotions around childhood and home. Together in the space they juxtapose a different kind of yearning. Research and process Research Inspiration is drawn from Gaston Bachelard's concept of 'Intimate immensity', the idea that small, enclosed spaces can evoke cosmic feelings and vast imaginative landscapes. In his work The poetics of space (1957), Bachelard refers to the mind as a tool for world-building and ordinary spaces, specifically emotionally charged spaces, like the home, as a 'reverie' and stage for personal mythologies. The paintings of Alexandra Levasseur (1982) sparked conversation with existentialism and naturalism whilst the writing and poetry of Sylvia Plath (1932), aided the artist's confrontation with selfhood and the dissolution of control. Plath's novel The Bell Jar resonates with the reasoning behind Somewhere between here and then, and how the structures of modern existence can often feel artificial and absurd.
