While assimilation conventionally follows a linear path of conformity, the Chinese community has also historically been forced to learn coexistence through a path of self-exotification. Caricaturing one’s culture turns the culture into a tool for entertainment that delectates white audience members and allows for the survival of Chinese immigrants. Analyzing the effects and power dynamics of such exchanges allows Chinese-Americans to further understand their positionality in the world, and the ethics of self-exotification–an action that is still prevalent in many communities, not just those of Chinese descent.
Inspired by Janine Antoni, Kara Walker, and the writings of W.E.B. Dubois, I have guided myself through a series of experiments that incorporate edible materials, and dance to further consider the performance and consumption aspect of identity. Through this research, I have developed a body of work that utilises circular shapes and loud patterns to emulate the visual language of spotlight effects, theme parks and Chinatown architecture.
