# Project Description FINAL GIRL 2 Jade Emsley Summary Final work I am a final year BACCC student living in Crouch End, London. Currently my area of interest is feminist theory within contemporary sex culture whilst using media and film to analyse these subjects. In the future I aim to publish my expanded theories and analyses whilst continuing to examine current sex culture and politics with a focus on the role of the modern female within international societies. College Central Saint Martins Course BA (Hons) Culture, Criticism and Curation Investigating the Final Girl theory in film and its relationship with sex culture and the theory of abjection. Final Girl 2 is an investigative and analytical dissertation exploring aspects of sex and feminist theory within two main pieces of media, X 2022 by Ti West and The Woman 2011 By Lucky Daye. Within this dissertation I analyse the relationship between horror film and female representation, using the theory of abjection to base these analyses on and to aid in expanding these theories to better understand my research. Final Girl 2 uses final girl theory to present the role of female characters within the horror genre in a way that highlights their sexualisation within violence and gore. Final girl theory presents a woman’s sexuality as a double edged sword as within the horror genre it can only help them escape the killer/s or eventually meet a slow and drawn out death. I also discuss the sexualisation of the killer and the juxtaposition of this compared to female protagonists. Male villains or antagonists are usually presented as chastised and incompetent within their sexual abilities and use their phallic weapons to compensate for this. The differences and extremes of gendered sexual representations is why I wrote this dissertation as I feel it can be used to portray a portion of contemporary society that is not widely and openly presented. The theory of abjection plays a key role in my research on final girl theory, I have written previous essays on Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection in regards to reactions of arousal and disgust within audiences and society when confronted with otherness in the form of sex, performance, gender expression and violence. Abjection plays a key role in the horror genre and the scenes and acts that are depicted within, however similar reactions can be produced while viewing scenes of a sexual nature so therefore I felt Kristeva’s theory of abjection fit well as an inspirational theory and basis for my analysis and evolution into other pieces of theory. Alternatively some conclusions to the sexualised storytelling Clover analyses manifests into the Final Girl taking the murderers weapon ; usually a phallic object like a knife or baton, and she uses it to kill him, which Clover coins the “penetration scene”. Clover’s theory highlights both of these acts as a fight of genders whilst a lot of the early slashers portray the killers as wearing masks, only becoming identifiable as male through their stature and threatening presence where as any and all Final Girls are moulded around feminine ideals, interestingly enough Clover talks about this gender representation as ultimately presenting these characters as trapped in their gender identities, the killer is repressed and angry, blaming his masculinity as the cause of his murderous tendencies and the Final Girl revels in her femininity until her sexualised self offends the antagonist to the point in which she must die. -exert from Final Girls 2 explaining the role of gender within slasher films and Carol J Clovers explanation of final girl theory.
