Abstraction of the Self

Isabel Moura Matthews

Summary

Final work

Through my practice I seek to realign the body with nature and express ever-shifting inner states through process, emotion, and transformation. Next year I'm looking forward to integrating new techniques and materials into my work which prioritise sustainability and innovation.

Graduation year 2025

This project explores the idea of abstracting the self—seeing it not as a fixed or solid identity, but as something dynamic, ever-changing, and fluid. Influenced by nihilist and existentialist thought, I question the belief that we are unified individuals with control over ourselves and the world. Instead, I see the self as something that constantly shifts, moment to moment, never staying the same.

I also focus on the growing disconnection between humanity and nature. As we become more distant from the natural world, I aim to realign the body with it—reminding us that we are part of nature, not separate from it. By doing this, I challenge the common view of the self as something individual and in control, and instead highlight our fluidity and impermanence. My work invites us to see ourselves as part of a larger, ever-changing process—capable of experiencing the world through a new version of the self at any given moment.
