# Project Description Chisenhale Works Canteen Ingrid Bjerkan Summary Final work The speculative proposal for Chisenhale Works Canteen is an ongoing project that will continue between now and the final submission this autumn. I am hopeful that the research into canteen spaces will continue beyond my master's studies, into the future, and would be excited to see even part of the research become realised. The project and research reflect my particular interest in food spaces which bring people together, combining a social and environmental agenda with a materially sensitive approach and real-world pragmatism. College Central Saint Martins Course M ARCH: Architecture Graduation year 2025 As our city hurtles towards growth, profit is valued over people and social spaces face continual erasure, leaving communities, both old and young, feeling isolated and fractured. Set within a canalside warehouse in East London, neglected for 40 years and on the cusp of redevelopment, my proposal for Chisenhale Works Canteen makes the case for its repair and reimagination, securing its future as a vital amenity for the local artist community and wider neighbours. Against a backdrop of entangled challenges, the Canteen is a space to slow down, for a sense of belonging and connection over comforting, affordable food. Here, the communal table enables everyday interactions and experiences, building mutual understanding through the fundamental act of sharing a meal. A phased programme of light-touch interventions allows the scheme to evolve, at every stage testing its programming, governance, social and economic viability, and in the process, caring for both a building and for people. The model features the internal Canteen space, an external yard and the existing upper-floor dance studios. The model highlights a light-touch approach to the reimagination of the derelict space, populated with a moveable kit-of-parts and adaptable structures used for both food service, building repairs and dance performance.
