Course BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design

Graduation year 2025

In Turkey, women’s lifestyles, social roles, and their relationships with space are changing. This evolution opens up new possibilities for furniture design to explore ways of reflecting women’s physical and emotional expressions. This project presents a lounge chair design that prioritises women’s aesthetic expectations and personal spaces. The design enables the expression of the female body and identity both physically and emotionally, combining functionality with aesthetics. Inspired by how women in Ottoman harems expressed themselves through space and aesthetics, the design also integrates with contemporary individual lifestyles, creating a new language where women can freely express themselves within their living environments. By bringing a women-centred design approach into the furniture industry, this project aims to provide users with a space to express themselves. It creates a design experience that enhances the modern woman's presence within her living space by harmonising aesthetics and functionality.

Final work

This lounge chair has an asymmetrical pine frame. The cushions follow the natural curves of a woman's body. There is one main cushion and two accordion-style cushions. They all work together to make sitting more comfortable. It is designed to maximize the sitting experience on the chair.

The main cushion is made from coconut fiber and wool. No synthetic foam was used during the padding or shaping process. The structure is created by stitching the coconut fibers together. It is filled with wool to provide maximum comfort. Finally, the cushion is covered with traditional Turkish fabric.
