Summary

Final work

I am Hongyi Chen,  I majored in MA Fine Art: photography as a postgraduate and graduated from Camberwell College of Art. Much of my recent work draws from the space where the personal and external worlds overlap—particularly through the language of light. I photograph the subtle shifts of shadow and reflection that natural light casts into private spaces, as it filters through windows or slips between curtains.

Much of my recent work draws from the space where the personal and external worlds overlap—particularly through the language of light. I photograph the subtle shifts of shadow and reflection that natural light casts into private spaces, as it filters through windows or slips between curtains. For me, these quiet traces are not only the translation of chaos from the outside world (or my mind), but also markers of time itself. In this sense, light becomes both a visual and emotional presence—a witness to change, a metaphor for impermanence. Time, as revealed through these fleeting illuminations, is steady, cyclical, and healing.

Folds of Stillness, 2025

Print on clear polyester film | 60x45 2

Print on acetic | 100x133 1

Meditation has become central to my approach to this process. In stillness, I have learned to observe without rushing to find solutions, and to notice what slowly emerges — just like the light. Through meditation, I embrace ambiguity and shifting thresholds, allowing meaning to surface in its own time.
