Iceberg

HONGTAO TANG

Summary

Final work

Iceberg explores how individuals in contemporary society are often defined by visible labels—gender, occupation, appearance—which serve as the tip of an iceberg. Beneath these surface identities lies a hidden world of fragility and emotional complexity. The concept originates from my own self-analysis over the past two years, during which I recognized how I, too, am categorized by certain labels, such as being “solitary.” I filmed an underwater video, using transparent film to symbolise isolation from the external world and self-imposed constraints.

Iceberg explores how individuals in contemporary society are often defined by visible labels—gender, occupation, appearance— which serve as the tip of an iceberg. Beneath these surface markers lies a larger, more hidden world of emotional complexity and vulnerability. This film depicts a body trying in vain to break through a frozen layer of ice which eventually imprisons them. After repeated attempts to break free, he simply ceases struggling altogether, to embrace a hidden strength. The work metaphorically represents how social labels may function as restraints, inhibiting a more complex reading of an individual’ s inner depth and self awareness.
