Within this project, I explored depictions of Greek goddesses and ways that I could use symbolism to represent their traits. In many traditional portrayals of goddesses they are often shown in human bodies with minimal clothing, so I used this project to show a different perspective where they can be represented through their animal associations. I felt that I could better portray a goddess’s divinity by combining symbols of their power to create an otherworldly form, transcending the limits of a human body.

Final work

A combination of owl and snake features, delicately painted with saturated warm yellows which blend into cooler tones of lavender and blue.

Portrait of Athena

Inspired by Greek mythology, this piece is my interpretation of the goddess of wisdom, Athena. The owl and snake features are common symbols associated with her, representing divine wisdom and cunning strategy. With eyes staring out at the viewer, this piece captures Athena’s all-knowing nature, with its vibrancy and saturation adding to the otherworldly atmosphere.

(59 x 84 cm, Acrylic on wood)

Portrait of Athena

When played alongside viewing its accompanying painting, this piece creates a full experience of being transported into the mythological world of Athena, intended to further enhance the ethereal essence of the painting, as well as providing a calming ambiance.
