Profile picture of Hollie Kennedy

Hollie is a multi-talented textile artist who focuses on pushing material boundaries to create innovative fabric designs. Hollie enjoys traditional techniques combined with personal DIY experiments to create overall feminine and fun fabrics. She often informs her work with thorough research that usually presents a narrative; a whimsical story or political concept to enrich her design ideas. Creating as she goes, responding to her research and fabric creation in the moment, ‘seeing what happens’. This leaves space for her unique samples to unfold naturally and for her fantasies to run wild. With her artisan father being a builder, she tends to take on strong notions of his problem-solving DIY process and allows this mindset to influence and drive forward her creations. Responding to found materials in a way that becomes material led design. She enjoys the combination of heavy materials partnered with the soft, delicate finishing of a knitted fabric or more generally a masculine and feminine amalgamation. Her interest in found materials doesn’t end there and clearly presents through her use of book-binding with interesting scrap papers. She completes these with drawing experiments pursued with mainly oil pastels, coloured pencils and watercolours. Generating multi-media studies that support her style of work.

'She's A Catch!' explores the uncommon relationship between femininity and fishing.

I intended to create outcomes that express both irony and individuality, provoking the idea of being “too sexy to fish.” I wanted to highlight the tension between practicality and excess in women’s clothing through humorous references and exaggerated textiles. Combining fishing (being considered a traditionally masculine activity) with hyper-feminine, revealing knitwear allows for a tongue-in-cheek critique of how women are expected to dress in various social contexts. In summary, this project draws on the contrasting aesthetics of utilitarian fishing gear and flamboyant festival style. I designed a felted gilet set, using the off-cuts from the top to construct the bottoms, ensuring a zero-waste approach. I also developed a range of experimental fabrics to better articulate and explore my design concepts.
