College London College of Communication Course MA Commercial Photography Graduation year 2025 Echoes Along the Tracks is a deeply personal exploration of memory, nostalgia, and identity. The project revisits photographer Hemanth Naidu’s childhood memories of travelling with his late father during summer breaks who used to work for the South Western Railways,India. A time when those train journeys became a bridge between a hardworking father and his young son. Watching his father’s dedication and kindness left a lasting impression that continues to shape Hemanth’s sense of self and creative voice. Through cinematic reconstruction and staged photography, Naidu recreates fragments of those intimate journeys, using his family members as characters to step back into his father’s world. Each image is both a memory and a reimagining—blurring the boundaries between truth and emotion. The process is as much an act of remembrance as it is of rediscovery, allowing him to reconnect with the quiet tenderness and strength his father embodied. This body of work stands as a tribute to his father’s enduring presence in absence, reflecting how love and memory persist despite time and loss. Through evocative visuals and emotional realism, Echoes Along the Tracks invites viewers to reflect on their own relationships and the fragile, shifting nature of remembrance—how we hold onto those we’ve lost through the stories we continue to tell. Final work Between Departures and Goodbyes There were times when I wouldn’t see my father for weeks while he was away at work. Whenever his train passed through my village, my mother would hand me a small tiffin box to deliver to him. I would reach the railway station long before the train arrived, afraid to miss that fleeting moment. For just a few seconds, as the train slowed and he appeared by the door, I could hand him the box and catch his smile. That brief exchange — his face lighting up with warmth and pride — made my day. This image recreates one such cherished memory, a quiet intersection of love, distance, and the simple joy of being seen. Summer of 2006 I still remember it like it was yesterday — the first time my father agreed to take me on a train journey with him in the summer of 2006. I was ten years old, filled with excitement and curiosity. Ever since that day, I would eagerly wait for every summer to arrive, just so I could travel with him again. Those journeys became a tradition, a time that belonged only to us — moments of laughter, learning, and quiet observation that remain deeply etched in my heart. Where the Journey Became Home Travelling with my father during the summer holidays remains one of my most cherished memories. Those train journeys, sometimes lasting up to ten days. Watching him in his crisp white uniform, carrying out his duties with quiet dedication and pride, filled me with admiration. He had started from a very humble position, and his commitment to his work left a lasting impression on me. Those beautiful journeys not only brought us closer but also shaped the person I am today. For the Moments That Passed My father was often on-duty during his birthday, our family festivals, and even his wedding anniversaries. Any special day, he was always working. This image from the series reflects me looking back in time — to those years when he spent all his precious days on the train. The watch featured in this photograph is the very one he wore every day, a symbol of his dedication and the passing of time. By including it, I wanted to preserve a fragment of his presence, capturing both his absence and his enduring connection to me. Research and process Behind the scenes Shooting in a public railway museum came with its challenges, but with an incredible crew by my side, we turned the vision into reality.
