Tower of Memories

Driven by curiosity, Haylina explores the emotional connections surrounding mundane objects and the connections we tend to form with them. In contrast, she also explores the significance we place on high-value items and their associations with social class and economy. She feels obligated to value objects deeply and explore the reasons behind their meanings, connections, and the memories that they hold. This has led her to delve into the associations objects have and the connections to individuals and communities, particularly those tied to migration, specific to the Windrush movement. With Jamaican heritage as part of her background, her work has developed from a strong desire to understand the stories behind these connections. Haylina is particularly interested in two contrasting materials, those being clay and metal. She enjoys the fluidity and freedom of clay, whilst metal requires precision for clean lines and polished finishes. In her current projects, she aims to create purposeful, intuitional work that embraces simplicity and functionality, allowing each design to convey a sense of quiet elegance.

Objects can be used as an insightful way to unlock and share memories. They can be used as a way of learning about individuals as well as the communities they are a part of. Tower of Memories is a series of stacked metal drawers used to hold personal objects that come together to tell a story and share memories, encouraging learning through conversation and discovery. Clear sheets of acrylic are used to protect items inside, allowing users to reveal a unique narrative and insight into the lives of the objects and the memories they are a part of. What story is revealed is in the hands of the viewer. Each drawer tells a different story, linking the objects to their owners as well as their extended community.
