Unspoken Life

Haonan (Harry) Chen

Summary

Final work

My name is Harry. I was born in China and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, a dual cultural experience that deeply informs my perspective as a designer. I identify as queer, and this identity is not just personal. It’s central to how I see the world and make work. My design practice is driven by a fascination with colour, silhouette, and the complexity of human identities.

I’m particularly drawn to exploring the spaces between cultures, genders, and between what is visible and what is hidden. My work often reflects that tension, sometimes playful, sometimes introspective, but always intentional. I use fashion as a language to question norms, express emotions, and tell stories that aren’t always loud but are always honest.

My designs often combine sculptural forms with bold palettes, using both traditional and unconventional materials. I’m inspired by wearable art, performance, and history, but I’m equally interested in the way everyday people move through shared spaces. Ultimately, I want to create pieces that resonate with individuals who live in between boxes, just like I do.

This project began with an exploration of drag and vogue culture, which is well known in Western countries. However, in many Asian cultures, similar expressions of gender and identity are less visible or understood. I drew inspiration from Chinese opera, where male performers often play female roles, particularly the Hua Dan , a character type known for grace and femininity.

Building on this tradition, I focused on the opera mask as a symbolic tool, a way to help people express parts of themselves that may be hidden. For me, as an Asian queer person, coming out wasn’t easy. Fortunately, I grew up in New Zealand, where the support of my friends made that journey possible.

This project is a reflection of my personal experience, but it also carries a broader message: to encourage others to embrace their true selves. Even when it’s difficult, self expression and authenticity are powerful and necessary acts.
