This project began with an exploration of drag and vogue culture, which is well known in Western countries. However, in many Asian cultures, similar expressions of gender and identity are less visible or understood. I drew inspiration from Chinese opera, where male performers often play female roles, particularly the Hua Dan, a character type known for grace and femininity.
Building on this tradition, I focused on the opera mask as a symbolic tool, a way to help people express parts of themselves that may be hidden. For me, as an Asian queer person, coming out wasn’t easy. Fortunately, I grew up in New Zealand, where the support of my friends made that journey possible.
This project is a reflection of my personal experience, but it also carries a broader message: to encourage others to embrace their true selves. Even when it’s difficult, self expression and authenticity are powerful and necessary acts.
