'Take Refuge'

Georgia Bird

Summary

Final work

I'm Georgia — an artist and facilitator exploring the intersections of nature, community, and neurodivergent experiences. My work often takes shape through photography, film, and the creation of immersive, enclosed spaces where rest, reflection, and softness are invited in. Disability is at the forefront of my practice, shaping and changing my thought processes and how I make.

Graduation year 2025

This is a three-part work consisting of a 1.2m2 CNC cut structure which has leaf patterns cut out, a publication and a hand framed photo etching, showing a 35mm photograph I took whilst playing with the structure in the rain with friends. This has then been printed onto paper that I made from the original structure with paper making materials I fabricated from old screen-printing frames. The work was motivated by inaccessibility of urban art viewing environments for neurodiverse people and a desire to be in the contrasting calm of the forest. This work addresses the need for a quiet space to allow for unmasking and one to one connection. I have also been thinking about alternative ways of art viewing like alternative formats in the mail. The first work which was computer aided came about as my heart condition makes heavy lifting/fabrication difficult. I have been working on processes that respect my needs. I have then reverted to ‘by hand’ processes later on.
