Neuroarchitecture is a field in which neuroscience meets architecture to design spaces that positively affect our health, mood, or performance.
The aim was a dynamic, interesting, and evocative design. This comes from a belief in the importance of sensory stimulation provided by architecture and its impact on users' well-being. It’s a conviction that the repetitive plain, flat surfaces, and straight angles of modern cities are rather sensory-depriving. This understanding drives the design to look for inspiration in the diverse natural world of organic structures that were our primary surroundings and source of sensory stimulation.
The proposal is an adaptation of Gasholder No.8 at Kings Cross into an innovative hub that meets the needs of students and young adults. To respect the existing gasholder park, the facility is designed above the ground using tension. The centre would offer dedicated study and work spaces alongside integration spaces like restaurants and cafes. Embracing biophilic design, the centre prioritises incorporating nature in the interior, nature-inspired dynamic design, and maximising natural lighting and ventilation. These come together to create a beautiful human-centred design that supports well-being and helps to balance the demands of study and work. Through the use of natural ventilation systems, the centre aims to reduce its environmental impact.
