Through this project, I explored the circus as a representation of societal performance and identity curation. I created a mask that visually links to circus performance while metaphorically displaying behaviour adaptation in response to social influences. The mesh provides a glimpse of the wearer’s appearance, but their features are concealed by a patchwork of real images, superficial additions, and the Emily Dickinson quote, “how dreary to be somebody!”, demonstrating how identity is formed from outside influences. Hidden on the ruff's underside are collected quotes that reveal how we truly feel about the pressure to alter ourselves and how we appear.

Final work

Person wearing mesh mask with a ruff collar. The mask contains facial features made from fabric, beads, wool, and acetone printed fabric.
Headshot of person wearing mesh mask with a ruff collar. The mask contains facial features made from fabric, beads, wool, and acetone printed fabric.
Mesh mask with sewn features with ruff collar. The ruff is being lifted to reveal strips of text underneath - not all text is visible or clear.
Close up of person wearing a mesh mask with fabric ruff. The ruff is being lifted and is concealing some of the face.

This piece represents how our identities are formed from a patchwork of influences, and how the way we present ourselves differs from who we truly are.
