This project is inspired by the philosophy of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

It combines handwoven textiles with tree-like forms made of wire and freshwater pearls.

The concept of mutual generation and restriction (相生相克) is translated into tactile, structural form.

The visual patterns draw from ancient Chinese earth-loom Yin-Yang motifs.

These traditional forms are reimagined to evoke cultural memory and emotional healing in a contemporary context.

Each piece explores the tension between growth and constraint, cycle and balance.

The colour palette is informed by the symbolic tones of the Five Elements and Yin-Yang dualities,

offering a visual and tactile journey of inner harmony and restoration.

Final work

A double cloth textile featuring direct-dyed Tencel warp and pineapple fiber warp, with Pinayarn, Tencel, and hand-crafted wire-and-jewel floral forms

This textile piece was created using the double cloth technique. One warp is made of Tencel yarn dyed with direct dye, while the other warp is spun from pineapple fiber, generously sponsored by Pinayarn 🌟.

The weft incorporates Pinayarn, Tencel, and handcrafted floral tree structures made from metal wire and jewelry elements—a symbolic representation of the Metal and Earth elements in the Five Elements philosophy (with Earth generating Metal). These tree-like forms were handwoven directly into the fabric 🌟.

The pattern used in the jacquard technical file (developed using WeavePoint software) was inspired by a traditional grid motif known as “bowl rack square pattern” from Ancient Chinese Folk Loom Weaving. The geometric structure was extracted and reimagined for a contemporary textile context 🌟.
