Letters to My Unborn

Eyal Ben Dror

Summary

Final work

I am a documentary photographer based in Geneva, Switzerland. My work involves delving into raw emotions, hardships, nature, and the intricacies of my existence and everything surrounding me. Through personal narratives, both text and visual, I aim to illuminate universal themes. After graduating with distinction in the MA program with my final project "Letters to my Unborn" I now work on publishing the project as a photo literature book.

“Letters to my Unborn” is a cathartic photo-literature project that delves into my family life and challenges through a series of fictitious letters addressed to my unborn child. This intensely personal book offers a unique and thought-provoking perspective, specifically exploring the terrain of the male perspective on abortion, addiction, and loss. The book comprises 13 heartfelt letters accompanied by 29 evocative images. Readers are invited to embark on a personal and introspective journey, immersing themselves in the photographs and engaging with the emotionally charged text. The project aims to prompt deep reflection, contemplating individual experiences while touching upon universal existential dilemmas.

The perfect storm

Letter 1

Watching a reflection. It helps to ease a sense of unwanted anxiety. I see opposite known shapes and colors symmetrically supplement the physical objects before me. Monet used reflections to direct the viewer to the center of the image while inducing a sense of tranquility or a momentary ignorance from the uncertain opaque mystery beneath the water-reflecting surface. It's soothing. A speckle of wet gray sand had just moved a couple of millimeters from its fixed position since the last cold draft passed. No human ever notices it as it hides 80 cm underneath the pleasing image of the elliptical blurred trees and clouds that capture the human eyes when passing next to it. A camouflage, an almost mystical delusion that conceals the murky reality from our whithered senses. At 14 weeks, a human fetus reaches a length of 8.5 cm. According to Chat- GBT hospitals will typically dispose of the remains of a fetus after an abortion under the laws and regulations of the state in which they are located. This can range from burial, cremation, incineration, or other forms of disposal. Sometimes, the hospital may offer the parents the option to take the remains with them. I don't know the customs and laws in China where we got rid of you. I never bothered to think about it. You were like a speckle of dirt that suddenly floated on the water's surface, killing the wishful illusion of calmness. An undeniable proof of how blind we are. The only way to restore the pastoral image is to remove the dirt and toss it where it blends. On the ground.
