Esmé Matthews

Profile picture of Esmé Matthews

Esmé Matthews is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the tension between creation and decay, focusing on material transformation and the natural process of entropy. Working primarily with rusted steel, found objects, and other industrial materials, she investigates the life cycle of these objects- examining how they shift between states of order and disorder, structure and ruin.

This work is an investigation into entropy and the tension between creation and decay. The installation shows a bottle actively rusting a piece of steel, slowing dripping vinegar from a nipple onto the metal. In conjunction is an object made from rusted nails and rubber nipples secured to a discarded bottle, existing as a found object in a decrepit windowsill. These objects are found in an abandoned home, blending with the ruin that comes with time.

Final work

through a doorway, a plastic livestock feeding bottle drips vinegar out of a nipple onto a piece of rusting steel sheet metal.
A piece of rusted metal with liquid flowing down it.
