The Blessed Blooms of Broken Things

Summary

Many of my affinities in design stem from the nostalgia of growing up as a triplet in a forested area in the Netherlands. My surroundings taught me to appreciate the textures, shapes, and capabilities of nature, which now inform how I approach materials and fabrics. Growing up as a queer person in a conservative religious area, I’m also drawn to the tension between restriction and freedom, a theme I explore in my designs.

Graduation year 2025

A journey back to your hometown, reliving and reappropriating life as a young queer person in the Bible Belt.

Growing up in an area full of nature; experiencing this sense of freedom and peace. At the same time, feeling constrained and restricted by the conservative way of thinking around you.

This collection navigates through a story of identity, the nostalgia of growing up as a triplet and queerness. Dipping in the historical dichotomies between queerness and religion, while marrying these contradicting terms in designs and characters.

This collection symbolises the importance of sustainability in my creative practice. The curiousity of the seemingly infinite possibilities of using waste and upcycled materials resulted in my final collection being nearly entirely made from deadstock, home-grown and scrap/waste materials.
