Irish Tragedy

Ellen Maher

Profile picture of Ellen Maher

I am Irish and English but I live in London. I use fashion to express my design style, often in correlation to my dyslexia and my personal interests, creating work that feels like a little piece of me. I will be continuing onto LCF Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear.

This project circulates around the tragic history of Ireland and what defines Ireland to me. I look at the desolate, rural landscape and traditional clothing, personal photographs of my Irish family, their history, hometown (Abbeyleix), and my Dad’s stories through his early poetry. I look closely at the family’s personal identity to Ireland by taking inspiration from the County Laois tartan fabrics, the Maher Family crest, my Dad’s experience of living in rural Ireland through his solitary poetry and the breath-taking, rugged nature that surrounds the town. To expand my knowledge, I reference tragedy on a larger scale, looking at the ongoing conflict between Ireland and Britain through documentation such as the music of The Cranberries, Fontaines D.C. and movies including The Banshees of Inisherin, and photography of the Troubles by Don McCullin. This aims to connect my work with wider tragic historical references such as the Famine, culture, religion and folklore. I am aiming to raise awareness of underrepresented, small communities which are integral to the cultural ecosystem of Ireland, and question the often ignored problems and turmoil around Ireland.

Final work

Side view of my poem cyanotyped head scarf and details of the hand painted check sleeve and netted, fabric strip throw.
  • Front view of my final look. Includes hand weaving recycled fabric strips for the skirt and cape and fabric painting green/blue plaid for the tunic.
  • Right side view of my final outcome piece.
  • Left side view of my final outcome piece.
  • The outcome on a smaller model and in the context of a locational shoot. This allows the inspiration, muse and vision come to life in the whole photo.
  • Close up image of my headscarf and front of tunic, showing the designs in detail. My Dad's poem cyanotyped on and my hand painted green/ blue check.

Research and process

  • A page taken out of my ever evolving research board pages, looking at my separate, current inspirations for the project and merging them together.
  • A few photos I have taken in my Dad's home town, Abbeyleix, Co Laois, Ireland. The bog walk has many scenes of natural hues, found with oil pastels.
  • Early weaving tests using various materials (paper, coloured string, boning) and techniques, emulating subjects of the Irish topic I had so far.
  • Design development of the woven cloak piece, using recycled scrap green fabric and a net fruit holder. Used pastels and watercolours to draw this.
  • Some more defined design ideas, using a range of colours and slight shape changes to the skirt, neckline and waist to see what combination works best.
