Summary

Final work

A costume designer interested in exploring transformational and dynamic costumes that encourage movement from the wearer. I work by experimenting with materials, using this as a base for my design process focusing on conceptual ideas that explore current societal issues. I focus on developing characters that connect with the audience and evoke emotion to help drive the narrative of their story.

'Senescence' is a performative piece that explores feelings around aging and the acceptance of our changing bodies as women grow older. A dynamic costume that inhabits a mother and daughter duo who are finding the beauty in aging, recognising the wrinkles and imperfections are reminders of the memories they have gained along the way.

The costume encourages tension between the performers highlighting the struggle to accept the process, pulling away from one another in moments of the performance. In other moments we see the duo come together shortening the link between them and providing moments of embrace to highlight the support they both receive from another. The piece focuses on textures allowing the performers to feel the aging skin throughout the piece, accepting the process and finding beauty within this.
