# Project Description

Liquid Crystal Display

Elizabeth O'Brien

Summary

Final work

I'm an artist based in between Newcastle and East London. My practice blends digital animation and sculpture to investigate the way that we experience reality in a world that is becoming ever more virtual. Through a pluralistic approach to making, my practice attempts to address the entanglement of technological, social and natural networks. I draw on Gaian philosophies and sci-fi writers like Octavia E. Butler, while also looking at the aesthetics of beyond human communication, namely within mycelial and cephalopod species. I aim to create artefacts that reimagine anthropocentric narratives.

...She finds herself in the last room. Only a little artificial light is permitted by thin window slits that line the black painted walls. She blinks. Her pupils constrict as her body works to adjust to the darkness. She listens carefully and although muffled by the headphones that she anxiously dons, it's as though the room whispers. Adjusting to the space, she's confronted by a cluster of strange structures that appear to bloom from the floor and ceiling; some effortlessly hover just off the ground. Their expectant faces seem to crane towards her presence. One of the artefacts is made of smooth, thin bands of varnished wood that close around each monolith like a skeleton. The other seems to be coated in an eerie mycelial dust. As she moves around the room light spills from digital animations that are projected at the heart of several architectural compositions. This light catches the luxurious, crystal skins of the objects making them shimmer cautiously...
