College London College of Communication Course MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography (online) Graduation year 2023 The Shadows We Carry is a personal exploration of the word home, a term which is often difficult to define. It is commonly associated with ideas of family, origin, shelter and expressions of belonging, feeling secure and at ease. In Greek though, which is my native language and the one in which I firstly always think in, I have never found a faithful translation of home. Various alternatives are used according to the context but no one of them manages to transmit wholly the emotional weight that it carries. In this project, I use the language of photography to deconstruct the concept of home in order to explore its meaning and understand it better. Is the idea of home connected to geographical locations or to our closest people? I explored how the physical and the natural space are connected to it and I wondered if our roots get weaker if we take them out and plant them elsewhere. Very often in the hearing of home our first thought goes back to our childhood and we feel nostalgic. Can adults have their own homes or is this a place that belongs only to children? Maya Angelou in her book Letter to my daughter asserts that home is all those things that we carry inside us, “the shadows, the dreams, the fears and dragons of home under one’s skin” and concludes that “we feel safest when we go inside ourselves and find home, a place where we belong and maybe the only place we really do.” The dummy book follows a non-linear narrative similar to a dream. Through the images it leads the viewers in this journey of internal wandering and questioning. Ultimately, it calls them to embark on their own journey and explore their personal conceptions of the word home. Is there finally a common universal understanding of it or each one of us experience it in their own distinctive way?
