More Than Hair

Eleanor Byers

Summary

Final work

Hi, I am Eleanor Byers, a recent graduate from the London College of Fashion, who studied BA (Hons) Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Performance. For my final project I focused on wigs, toupees and hair extensions all handmade and styled from scratch. I have always been fascinated by the transformation process that occurs when performers get ready to be in character. I love to be hands-on and creative in my work.

Specialising in hair, makeup and wigs, I love every aspect of the industry and feel constantly inspired to get involved in fresh creative endeavours and innovative designs. My final project was inspired by an interaction with a stranger on a train, where I realised just how important wigs are to people, with many hiding that they are wearing one. I want to create a safe space in the industry and everyday life where people feel confident enough to wear and express themselves however they like, whether that is with hair pieces or not. I love the freedom wigs give in many different scenarios; to performers in quick changes, allowing a certain era to be achieved, or just for everyday wear – they are so versatile and used far more commonly than people may realise.

More Than Hair, is a short documentary video all about the uses of different wigs and hair pieces. From a drag queen's transformation to some custom, donated human hair wig's for two woman who have Alopecia, it shows the variety of just some of the reasons hair pieces are used. Often misunderstood, hair pieces and wigs have come a long way from the wigs you may picture in a fancy dress shop.

From measuring, cutting and sewing together pieces of lace to make the foundations of the wig fit to perfectly fit the shape of the head, then sewing on strands of hair, its a long technical but rewarding process.

Jackie, Holly, Chris, Maggie Zine and Kathryn all take part wearing wigs, toupees, drag transformations and halo hair extensions with model's getting to keep their custom hair pieces. Wigs and hair pieces are worn by everyone for many reasons, which the aim of 'More Than Hair' is showing, normalising and celebrating individuality.
