Graduation year 2025

A project centered around Philippino immigration based on research surrounding the American Philippino occupation. Blending the dress codes of the East and West based on my modern understanding of this cultural exchange and paying homage to pre-colonial Philippino dress codes and using this to inform materiality, reinventing the context of 'white shirt, denim jeans'. This project was born out of the curiosity of self and the tension I feel, identifying as queer and experiencing Asian diaspora in a western landscape

A vital part of my process was emotional response where I wrote about the sea acting as a border between cultural exchange:

A site and metaphor for romance

there to be sailed and conquered

battled against

A repository of dreams

the contrasts, the dualities

A seducer, a careless destroyer of life

A capricious unpredictability reminding us of our humanity,

ominously becalmed.

It can glitter seductively under a cloudless blue sky.

Family is reunited by sea voyages,

whilst others are forever separated.

Contextual research has played a key role, particularly conversations with my mother as we discussed her immigration story for the first time. I examined cultural jewellery as memorabilia of the past, the contrasts between Asia and the Western world, and how I can recontextualise the uniform of immigrants—one that, in many ways, led to my very existence.
