Disha Gupta’s curatorial practice unfolds through a feminist and decolonial lens, tracing how photographs carry memory, history, and emotion across time and place. She is drawn to artists who move between disciplines, those who weave photography with performance, film, text, and installation, to create spaces where the personal and the political, the intimate and the collective, can meet in conversation.

Rooted in the cultural and historical layers of the Indian subcontinent, Gupta’s work reflects on how contemporary Indian artists negotiate heritage, identity, and belonging within global art discourses. Her research explores how images, archives, and visual traditions are reimagined to question dominant narratives and propose new forms of seeing.

For Gupta, curating is not only about display but about dialogue. She approaches exhibition-making as a practice of care and translation, an ongoing process that invites viewers to pause, listen, and engage. Through her projects, she seeks to create spaces that hold complexity, where images can resonate beyond borders and histories can be retold from multiple perspectives.

Ultimately, Gupta’s practice aims to build curatorial frameworks that are fluid, inclusive, and responsive, anchored in local contexts yet engaged with global forms of exchange.

The curatorial project, For Both of Us, is a visual dialogue across generations, showcasing the works of photographer and filmmaker Avani Rai and her father, photojournalist Raghu Rai. The idea for the project was sparked by Avani’s own words, “Most of the time, I take the photograph that he would want me to take, and then I take the photograph that I want to take. So I take for both of us.” The exhibition explores visual inheritance and asks: Can an artist create their own vision while carrying the weight and gift of inherited legacy?
