The Human Life Cycle

Derin Colak

Summary

Final work

My name is Derin Colak. I'm from Turkey and was raised between Istanbul and Dubai. My work explores themes of nature, colour and emotions using materials like textiles, yarn and ink. I combine traditional techniques like Ebru marbling with experimental processes to create abstract, tactile pieces that reflect personal experience and the natural world. I will continue my education in BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.

My work explores the stages of the human life cycle through material, shape, and structure. Using a mix of yarn, inks, and polymer glue on canvas, I created a fragmented yet interconnected painting that reflects how our experiences shift over time. The varied shapes and sizes of each piece represent different life stages, while the vibrant colours express the range of emotions we encounter throughout our lives. The white strings connecting the forms symbolise the continuous thread that ties our memories, emotions, and experiences together.
