electroscape2 was a transient sound installation which ran only twice at specific yet generally insignificant times. The sound used will never be released.

Installation consisted of 4 radios tuned to static, a structure made from 3 TV aerials, 2 amps connected to a tape player and a CD player, respectively, playing 2 different tracks made from EMF (electromagnetic field) mic recordings, SDR radio transmissions, and field (+ field radio) recordings from trips to Swanscombe (largest electricity pylon in the UK) and Dungeness nuclear power station / RAF Denge.

The other half of this project was electroscape2 is gone - - a web page paper trail as my publication.

Through this paper trail, I wanted to explore absence and the idea of something transient/ephemeral never truly being lost - the idea of something being “lost” but somehow still “contained” within the space it existed.

All images in electroscape2 that are gone are from my field trips to record / find the sound for electroscape2, or are from the actual installation/lack of installation afterwards. They are site-specific - the places where the sound existed.

A map of electroscape2 is therefore created through the spaces it was made from, even though it no longer exists in the form it was able to be seen in (the installation).

I converted all the images to ASCII format (images made from text symbols) as their blankness gives a sense of something missing, or something which used to be something else - now converted to a format understandable in a new context/ world/space (in this case - a computer screen, the world inside the computer).

Quote from my dissertation:

Does the Thing exist within the gaps? The unsaid? The things which cannot be explained leave holes.

Research and process

electroscape (1)

video i made for electroscape (1) out of the image i used for the album cover - - one of my "nothing" photos, and an overlay of quickly changing pages of text from my accompanying dissertation

Warning: Contains flashing images
a black and white graphic made of layered images of electricity pylon ASCIIs, text, and a link to the electroscape audio online

electroscape (1) documentation page from my website

this was the original electroscape - - my dissertation project exploring electricity, place, time, radio, which for the accompanying soundscape I worked these concepts through layering sounds from various sources eg. EMF recordings, field recording, older audio recorded casually {eg. Traces of a conversation with a friend while I recorded the harmonic humming of a stationary bus while we waited at the stop}

electroscape audio can be found at this link:

Note: the file name shown in the graphic says "electroscape2" - this was just the working file name when i made electroscape, not to be confused with the project named electroscape2
