An experimental animation film based on the play The Peony Pavilion by Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu of the Ming Dynasty. My concept is based on surrealism and oriental mystical colors, combining the styles of traditional gongbi painting and Chinese dreamcore to tell a story about dreams and reincarnation. The short film discusses the heroine Du Liniang’s journey to find her memories by repeatedly rebirth through different dream worlds, and deepens the exploration of women‘s free will as she, defying death, crosses over life and death in search of her lover. Du Liniang, is portrayed as a red-clothed swords woman, a white-clothed ghost, and a lady from a prominent family, highlighting the ever-spinning carousel of life. Du Liniang is constantly reborn in new identities. It is a series of interconnected dreams, a cyclical journey of Du Liniang in search of her lover and memories.
