# Project Description The Conversations We Don't Have Channelle De Peralta Summary Final work College Central Saint Martins Course BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design Graduation year 2025 How can facilitated intergenerational dialogue between first-generation Filipino immigrants and their second-generation descendants help revitalise the evolving Filipino identity within the diaspora? Di Natin Napag-uusapan: The Conversations We Don’t Have As a second-generation Filipina, I grew up surrounded by stories but never had a space to explore them. This project became that space for myself, my family, and the Filipino community in Stevenage who have shaped me. My goal was to preserve moments we don’t often share and celebrate our culture through design rooted in home. Throughout the project, engaging with honest exchanges with families, tutors, and peers, I learned how powerful simple dialogue can be because often, it’s the conversations we don’t have that bring us closer together and help us grow. I invited eight Filipino parent and child pairs to have conversations in the comfort of their own homes across Stevenage. Using five questions about our Filipino identity and heritage, I filmed their genuine interactions. These conversations became five episodes, exploring tradition, migration, identity and memory, along with reportage illustrations, a trailer, and a promotional poster, all hosted on filipinostoriesathome.cargo.site. By choosing to film in each family’s home, I aimed to create and maintain that comfortable space where they could speak freely, surrounded by reminders of the Philippines and the lives they’re building here. This project is for every first-generation parent and second-generation child growing up between two cultures. It celebrates the families who took part and welcomes others, offering a space to document and share the stories we carry through life. For Filipinos in the diaspora, it provides an opportunity to see their identity reflected through open, intergenerational dialogue. The phrase ‘The Conversations We Don’t Have’ stems from how rarely parents and children truly discuss their evolving culture, especially when navigating life away from their home country and the reasons behind its traditions. In today’s fast-moving digital world, we rarely pause to really listen to the stories that shape our families, why traditions exist, how they’ve evolved, or what they mean now. Yet in quiet moments of genuineness, we reveal the essence of our culture and keep our stories alive. May these episodes encourage everyone to reflect, listen as conversations unfold and deepen their understanding of the Filipino identity and heritage. Final work The trailer offers a short glimpse into the project, bringing together moments of conversation, laughter, reflection, and everyday life inside each family’s home. It’s made to give viewers a feel for what the episodes hold and to invite them to connect and reflect on the importance of intergenerational dialogue in shaping and revitalising our evolving cultural identity.
