A Night in A Theatre

Chang Xu

Summary

Final work

Chang Xu is a theatre director and multidisciplinary artist. Her practice explores the poetic tension between the fragility and complexity of the world through haunted spaces, imaged as post-Anthropocene ruins. By conjuring lost and unfinished gestures, subtle moments, theatricality and the absurd, she constructs new allegories and hallucination that attempts to recover lost miracles and traces of joy, those fleeting intensities buried beneath the ruins of materialized world.

Without a real performer, this is a simple show unfolds in A Theatre. In the local center, there stands a theatre supported by scaffolding. Its name long forgotten. Decades ago, the local government found itself at a loss with this huge machine. On a February morning, demolition began but was abandoned halfway, leaving it in a state of awkward redundancy. In the years after the early morning of February, and even today, perhaps in a much more distant future. From dusk to midnight to dawn, In its endless sleep, it is haunted by fleeting moments of poetry, by the affair between reality and fiction, by stage quirks and pranks, by terror and ridicule, melancholy and ecstasy. It absurdly conjures forgotten gestures, rehearsing smalls things into scenes that never quite settle by its own. Will it encounter an anonymous audience, or will it actually stage an outcome, the answer is haunting in the endless rain, faulty clouds, and the drifting snow.

This works explores the subtle moments that make mundane life feel unfamiliar. In a world that is gradually becoming more materialistic and monetized, what place is left for poetry hidden in the cracks?

A man behind the curtain :" …your dream is passé. ...All those obsolete lots. The trouble is, the theater is included in it. The whole theater, and the back sheds too. It might get postponed... or even canceled—I’m not sure yet. Yeah... it’s definitely happening faster than planned ."

the local meteorological bureau using four words, all beginning with the letter "D," to describe the weather during this period: “Dull, Dark, Dreary, Disappointing.” Over the past eleven days, the region has received only sixteen minutes of sunlight, almost entirely concentrated around dusk.

Later, insiders revealed: "Mecca closed down the bingo club in 2014, and the building has been vacant ever since. Its future use is uncertain, though it is a Grade II Listed building. The venue made London headlines in 2016 after 700 youths showed up for a 'squat rave.' Riot police, police dogs, and helicopters were present at what locals described as a battlefield."
