Addressing the need for circular practices in the museum sector, this proposal facilitates the recovery, processing, and storage of leftover material from Somerset House’s existing artist studios, galleries, and exhibitions. Scaled across a wider network of art and culture establishments, this programme is expanded to harness cross-institutional collaboration and shared resources. The project celebrates the potential of reclaimed materials to reduce waste and orientate architectural processes towards a culture of sufficiency and maintenance. Embodying a living archive of creativity, the material bank will preserve Somerset House’s artistic and cultural legacy, while offering a path to a more resource-efficient materials economy.

The Masterplan
Unfolding the layers of my proposal to reveal the hidden systems. This exploded axonometric shows the proposal as a collection of spaces, illustrating the ways in which they interact with each other as well as the existing context. Inhabiting a historic and heritage site meant that designing with care was crucial. Adaptive reuse of the interior spaces opened up ceilings and circulation, while the storage structure was implemented without major interrogation with the existing facade.
