I'm a Foundation student in the 'Design for Theatre, Screen and Performance' pathway.

Inspired by the film ‘The Substance’, I explored the theme of anti-ageing culture and cosmetic surgery as a means to 'reverse' the ageing process. This led me to create a latex mask, designed for use in film, to represent the extreme lengths some women go to in pursuit of youth and beauty. The mask symbolises the pressure society places on women to conform to unrealistic and ever-changing beauty standards. Through this project, I aimed to critique and reflect on how cosmetic interventions are often glamorised, while revealing the risks and consequences that can come with irreversible aesthetic procedures.

Final work

  • A female character who has undergone cosmetic surgery. Behind her we see a surgeon and previous 'faces', each with beauty standards from other eras.
  • A latex mask of a female character who has undergone cosmetic surgery, in order to achieve an idolised youthful aesthetic.

Research and process

  • Clay model to be made into the latex mask.
  • A negative plaster mould of the sculpture.
  • The latex mask prior before painting.
