In this age of rapid change, informational overload, and escalating expectations, the youth are more distressed and unmotivated than ever. In attempting to provide comfort and motivation, I realized the contradictory nature of these concepts – comforting someone promotes contentment with their current situation, while motivation promotes discontentment and leaving the comfort zone. Through this project, I explore this paradoxical relationship and provide the audience insight into navigating this matter.
Final work

Memento
My first deliverable is a series of 7 posters titled “Memento”, designed to offer comfort, motivation, or both. Inspired by the noticeboard in front of my workstation where I pin pictures, these are intended to be displayed at home, acting as a reminder or “memento” of comfort or motivation for the viewer.
They are arranged on a scale from most comforting to most motivational. Drawing from ideas of color therapy, the green color palette and low tonal contrast is used to calm and relax while the red and high tonal contrast promotes energy and passion.

Synkretis
As my project progressed, I shifted my approach from simply offering comfort and motivation to exploring this paradox and finding deeper insight. I created this typeface as an artistic visualization of the paradox of these two concepts.
Synkretis is named after the Greek version of the word “Syncretism”, defined as the combination of different schools of thought. In this case, it is the combination of comfort and motivation, coming together to form a contrasting yet complementary whole.

The 21st Century Paradox
My project culminates in a booklet that summarizes the thinking behind my deliverables up to this point, and further explores this “21st Century Paradox” of comfort and motivation which ultimately reaches an insightful conclusion that viewers can take away from.
This booklet also serves as an extended type specimen for Synkretis, featuring its application in various scenarios that complement the content of the book well.
