# Project Description

NEW IDENTITY

Summary

Final work

I have always been fascinated by the effect interior design has on people and how it tells a story to the people inhabiting or just visiting a space. I like creating functional spaces where people feel transported somewhere else. I enjoy experimenting with new ideas and keeping an element of curiosity. I like people to feel a sense of luxury, uniqueness and playfulness. I am interested in pursuing a career in interior design and keep on learning.

Social housing has been an important component of our society for a very long time, and it has saved many people from difficult situations. Despite its importance, social housing and its residents have been subjected to stigma. Throughout the years, the government and local authorities have gravitated towards demolition as the main solution to deteriorating large-scale housing estates. For this reason, my project will focus on social equality.

This can be achieved through renovating the units in Allbrook House, Roehampton, which were under threat of demolition. I propose that the renovated houses would be given to young adults who are often unable to enter the property market, and the families previously inhabiting these spaces should be offered to live in newly built flats or bigger properties. Many of the currently used social housing units were built after the Second World War, and they no longer correspond with today’s standards and families’ needs.

The design language of my work is intentionally minimal, adaptable and introduced as a way to support young adults affordably transitioning to independent living. I use simple forms, natural materials and colours that create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. I decided to remove all the walls and create an open layout with built-in elements to create a space which offers everything from storage to built-in furniture to allow residents to personalise their environment. As the building was constructed in the 1960s, I also sought to preserve its original character and establish a connection between the interior and its surroundings.

I intended to change the way social housing is perceived, which influences the way it is designed, because it is time for it to be viewed as more than a last resort, and to make it available to those in need without shame and stigma.

Danebury Ave, London SW15 4HB

Because of the columns that run from the first floor to the last one, separating the units I thought of using colour to unify more units. Additionally, it is a refreshing way to see the building.
