My aim with this project was to push the layers of digital and physical process to be not just be the way in which I worked, but to be visible in my outcomes. By fusing projected moving image over a still image, I question the value in copies of copies. Embracing the high versus low qualities allowed me to represent a piece of work in multiple duplicates of itself, and turn each stage of my process into a vital part of what ultimately became the single question: “What is that?”

Final work

‘What is that?’ is result of many layers of photography, print and projection among other processes. It explores the value in low-resolution images, the moving image and encouraging a viewer to ask, “What is that?”

This photograph is of a 76 x 56.9 cm projection piece. An image of an image is printed and worked over, with a second acetate layer worked over with the same image and suspended in the air. A four minute video of the same imagery glitching and moving around the work is projected over the entire piece and interacts differently with the two surfaces.
