# Project Description Beyond A Binary Alexandria Sergis Summary Final work I have just completed my UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, where I specialised in painting. I like to approach my work through trying a variety of experimentation and processes, along with researching beforehand artists that have represented gender. My work is personal to me and I like to express my views through painting. I plan to study Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts. College School of Pre-Degree Studies Course UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Graduation year 2025 I experimented with gender-nonconformity in my paintings by manipulating body parts and juxtaposing gender roles. I played with the idea of how gender is viewed and constructed in society, along with the history of gender in art. My main inspirations were looking through gender theories and queer artists in books and online sources. I have always peaked an interest in gender representation. I wanted to deconstruct the dehumanisation and alienation of bodies with transitioning gender identities. Final work Beyond A Binary I utilised the wood workshop by cutting and re-attaching two larger pieces of wood to create two rectangular shapes. These shapes were attached with hinges to create a two-sided painting that stood onto the ground when folded. I used sugar for texture in the background, and created two sides of a painting with slightly different art styles to convey two contrasting tones. The materials I used were acrylic paint, wood, hinges, screws, sugar, wood glue and oil pastel. The painting by Giuseppe Bonito, ‘The Femminiello,’ was a big inspiration. The artist Stanislava Kovalcikova, has a grotesque art style that I wanted to incorporate. I looked through books to study into masculine and feminine characteristics portrayed in art.
