Profile picture of Alexandra Jean Auger
Alexandra Jean Auger is a tapestry weaver and knit designer. Handmade at the intersection of fineart and fashion, her work aims to find the bit of poetry – melancholy or euphoric and sometimes both – found in life’s everyday grime and grittiness. Her signature style is colourful, tongue-in-cheek, and pictorial in fine detail, drawing inspiration from constant photo-taking, overheard conversations, and lengthy city walks. Source visuals are distorted through a variety of digital and manual processes and reinterpreted as cloth. Whether garment or gallery piece, the aim is always to evoke that a-ha moment of “I’ve done that!” or “I’ve felt that!”, bonding individuals through shared experience.

This long sleeved pullover was created during my two-week Create Plus Basics training program at the Knit Design Centre in Leicester. Programmed by me and knit on the STOLL machine, it uses the plating technique to depict a metallic broken chainlink fence against an inky navy merino 'sky'. It's a reminder of many teenaged scenes, but particularly of sneaking into the Dundas & Bathurst pool in Toronto on summer nights.
