An animation based self project, with a big inspiration on Yuki Onna of traditional japanese mythology and modern retelling of stories like the tale of the bamboo cutter by the Studio Ghibli. The story follows a traveller that gets stranded in the snowy night woods and comes upon an abandoned village, only to find a peculiar woman in white calling for them. While offering warmth of a coat and their lantern, the woman suddenly springs up, turning into a ghoul as she turns out to be a spirit seeking human souls. As she starts to suck out the travellers life force, they drop the lantern which leads to the spirit having a flashback back to when she was still human. After remembering how she had frozen and turned into a spirit after fleeing her burning village, she decides to spare the villager who had offered her warmth. The next time they wake up, they are alive and well, with their map back and only the spirits robe left. The traveller pays respects to the village and continues down their path after thanking the spirit for sparing their life. The story focuses on the theme of warmth through sympathy and forgiveness. And was made using photoshop and AE, as my first time using the software.

Research and process

A collection of images of illustrations for the environments.

All of the environmental illustrations

I illustrated them all using Paint Tool Sai, heavily inspired by Ukiyo-e and keeping it very painterly and illustrative. I would layer these parts when animating the actual environments in the final thing.

One of the puppets cut-outs, specifically the traveller.

Traveller Body puppet cutout example

I made the puppets using Paint Tool Sai, and later on cut them together and rigged them to be animated. The designs were partly inspired by other characters, and either their occupations or environments.
