As one pathway to university entrance examinations, the arts entrance examinations command a substantial following within Chinese society. Whilst attracting considerable attention, society has gradually recognised that the constraints imposed by these examinations on aesthetic freedom suppress the creative expression and psychological needs of many art students.
This project combines research with filmmaking practice to explore how China's art education system limits the construction of individual identity among art students, seeking a balance between artistic education and students' creative freedom.

Beloved No.001
Set within a Chinese art high school, the film is about a girl called “001” trapped within a secret room. “001” awakens lost memories through various objects within the room. From warm memories of secretly breaking school rules with her lover, to witnessing her death, to recalling how her own cowardice indirectly led to her suicide,
Her pain testifies to how this educational model kills the emotions and individuality of art students. The film concludes with a behind-the-scenes segment suggesting that, given another chance in a parallel reality, ‘001’ might bravely reach out to her lover.
