About

Khalil Ismail is a British designer, engineer, and philosopher-technologist working at the intersection of software + hardware for cognitive augmentation. As a graduate of Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art, he pursued a double masters (MS + MA) in Innovation Design Engineering. He is most interested in ambient neural interfacing.

Work

Khalil has held positions at Apple as an interaction designer for spatial computing, Microsoft as a product manager in AI, Snap Inc. as an AR experience prototyper, and a neurotech startup spun out of the University of Cambridge; the latter during his bachelors (industrial design, mechanical engineering). He has also been a behavioural design researcher at a cognitive science group in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial , and worked with Oxford University’s Philosophy Department on architecting AI that preserves human autonomy and agency.

In the US, Khalil was a researcher at MIT Media Lab (Fluid Interfaces), working on memory augmentation and sleep + dream engineering. Separate from his work at MIT, Khalil is an AI researcher at Harvard University — within the exploratory metaLAB at Harvard BKC/GSD.

Recognitions

In the UK, he has previously won a national innovation award at Buckingham Palace, is a Scholar of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Life

Khalil was born and raised in Warwickshire, England, and now lives in Kensington & Chelsea, London. In his free time, Khalil is ‘writing poetry, building robots, or drinking copious amounts of tea’.

Much of Khalil’s work is under IP or NDA. You can get in touch via LinkedIn or email: khalil@ismail.com
