About
Ifeoluwa Afolayan is an interdisciplinary innovator, designer and engineer with a background in Electrical and Communication Engineering. She designs for people and planet, with products , using design and engineering as tools to create, manage and drive innovation. She refers to her primary design anchor as ‘anticipatory design’, observing humans in the context of their environment and time, and working at the edge of the near future to design interventions that either put a stop to harmful current realities or create new possibilities and futures. Her visionary practice, therefore, focuses on creatively exploring, designing and developing technology, systems and products that understand and anticipate the needs of people, technologies, ecosystems, and future generations.
Before starting her postgraduate studies in Innovation Design Engineeering, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Engineering at Covenant University in Nigeria, which provided a foundation in network engineering, electronics and hardware engineering. She also worked as a telecommunications engineer at Huawei and after graduating, briefly worked at Computer Warehouse Group as a Systems and Infrastructure engineer where she continued to develop her skills.
As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, confronting the issues of the rest of the world daily, she always wanted her career to contribute in some way or other to making the world a better place. This, coupled with childhood inventiveness, was why she chose to do engineering. Changing the world seemed like an unattainable dream, but she spent the last two years at the MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering course, a collaboration between Imperial and the Royal College of Art, learning how to do exactly that. Using creative exploration, scientific rigour and contextual, entrepreneurial considerations to solve complex, wicked problems. She has designed award winning products like Aeropod, Germinode and Soro, with her products breaking new ground primarily across physical computing and sustainable agriculture.
