Lock Picking Robot — Unlocked, the Lockpicking robot! Unlocked is the worlds fastest lock picking robot. Design as an alternative to master keys (such as the systems used on every suitcase) which have large inherent security flaws. It uses a series of wires fed into a lock through a set of tubes, to mimic any key. This means that the robot can be set into the shape of a key or told to try different combinations until it finds the right key. It can test up to 85 combinations a minute so can open a standard lock in about 3-5 minutes. https://github.com/etinaude/unlocked

Swarm Robotics for Brick Construction — I built a series of robots which navigate construction sites to help lay bricks and alleviate the many declining size of the construction industry. This is done through a masonry robot which places bricks with a some innovative mechanisms and a rover which moves through the unstructured terrain to carry bricks around.

ESDA — Early seizure detection gloves which uses flex-sensors to detect hand poses early in a clonic-tonic seizure. Then uses an embedded TensorFlow model on an ESP32-S3 to sense hand tension and flag abnormalities to caregivers.

Cardi, the cardboard sofa — A modular, sustainable couch designed to be made out of cardboard. Since sofas are hard to move and get fly tipped very often, having a sofa made out of extra strong cardboard which can be disassembled to move house or thrown into your recycling bin when it gets old makes for a very sustainable sofa. Estimated to half the carbon foot print of a traditional sofa. Due to this we have won an award from a major sofa manufacturer

I’m Etienne, I love working on the intersection of Design and Technology. Before coming to RCA, I studied computing and worked as a technology and prototyping advisor for a makerspace in New Zealand. Since then, I have worked on over 70 of different projects, from a lock-picking robot to edible cups and lots of things in between.
